Jazz Band / 10′ / Difficulty: Hard / 2022
Just as an actual cove smooths out the rough and choppy nature of the ocean, Mid-Winter Cove aims to recreate the contrast of the far-away ocean with the still bay. A circular bitonal progression with an underlying 4+4+4+3 conveys the open unsteadiness of the ocean, no land in sight, until the final resolution sweeps in. Just like a captain of a ship seeing land for the first time in a few months, this sudden resolution provides excitement in the moment as tonic association resumes.
